When our trip started it was not our intention to learn how to scuba dive. It was in the back of our minds but never a formality. I was always afraid of going scuba diving after my experience in Cancun 10 years ago (that’s for another post) and was def. not looking for the opportunity.
However, while in India we met a couple that had gotten their open water scuba diving certificate and had a blast. happy gal and I decided it was now a top priority.
We arrived to Koh Tao in late February after a long stay in Koh Phangan. I was a bit nervous since my previous scuba diving experience ended with me throwing up all over the boat upon my ascent. However, G, our scuba instructor, removed that within one hour of speaking with him. happy gal already wrote about the whole experience but I’d like to add that Scuba Junction rocked! After my first dive I knew scuba diving will become a new hobby!
After 12 logged dives now, I am so glad we made it a top priority! I’ve seen a shipwreck, sea turtles, sea stars, sting rays, cuttle fish, grouper, buffer fish, box fish, schools of tuna, octopus, jellyfish, crabs, shrimp, and another 100 or more fish and coral species I don’t know the names of. It’s a whole different world down there. It really feels like you’re going to space with the zero gravity, the need for oxygen, and the vast difference it is.
Every dive has been magical but for me besides enjoying the view, it is the relaxation of just floating and letting your mind go free. You think of nothing but breathing and letting the current take you while enjoying lots of eye candy.
If you’ve never scuba dived before, I highly recommend it. I regret waiting 10 years for such a wonderful experience.
Have you dived before? Where? If not, would you? Leave a comment!
