Our future retirement home – Formentera

Formentera, España … paradise on earth. An island that is part of the Balearic Islands autonomous community, 12 miles long and 4 miles south of Ibiza. It has the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen on this earth, more than BVI, Puerto Rico, Cancun, Punta Cana, Bahamas, Colombia, Belize, etc. The water is crystal clear with a many shades of blue, the sand soft, and the life style relaxed.

We took the AquaBus [highly recommended as it is a fourth of the price of most ferries] from Ibiza city to Formentera, arrived and rented a moped for 20 euros. We decided to go to the furthest beach from the port [Playa Es Arenals] as we heard the most famous beach [Playa Illetes], although beautiful, is packed with people during the day. Playa Es Arenals is a long stretchy beach where the water is shallow to your knees for about 100 m into the sea. It’s a pretty cool experience.

After a nice swim and some food, we head to the mirador with breathtaking views of the island’s north and south shores. We later headed to Es Calo, which had pink … PINK sand! And ended the day with a nap at Plaa Illetes.

What surprised me was that over 75% of the women were topless in all the beaches we visited and about 10% all nude. happy gal and I were uncomfortable at first but we ended up getting used it. I even got to have a very short conversation with an italian lady that was top less.

Not that we’re thinking of retirement … as our trip is a form of mini-retirement, BUT it would be pretty cool to spend 4 months a year every year windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, and relaxing in Formentera.
