We’re off!

And we’re off!  It still hasn’t sunk in completely.  With visas to Iran and India, a Eurorail pass for 2, and of course our multiple passports in hand, we have finally left the US and are sitting on our third airplane of the day…first from the Bay Area (Oakland) to LAX, then LAX to Dallas/Fort Worth, and finally from Dallas/Fort Worth to Mexico City.

We will soon arrive to Mexico Cityand I’m a little nervous about traveling toMexicogiven that every time I turn on the news, there’s another story about drug cartels causing havoc.  Once we arrive, we will meet the Castañeda family for dinner at a restaurant called Cambalache.  And then tomorrow we’ll be off to the city of San Miguel de Allende.  I hear it is a haven for foreigners living inMexico.  It was a very memorable city for happy guy the last time he went so he wants to show me around.

It’s amazing that we are only traveling with 2 backpacks and a shoulder bag/purse for nearly 10 months.  And that’s it!  In my backpack I have clothes (1 pair of pants, 1 pair of leggings, 1 pair of shorts, 2 dresses, 1 long sleeved shirt, 5 tank tops, 3 t-shirts, 1 blouse, 2 bikinis, 1 rain zip up jacket, 1 down insulated jacket, three pairs of flip flops-everyday, shower, and fancy, 4 pairs of socks, and 12 underwear), a microfiber towel, a makeup

bag, and photocopies of our credit cards and itineraries.  In my shoulder bag/purse I have my money belt (with cash and passports), credit cards, netbook, glasses, hair ties, lip gloss, pens, breath mints, and a card I was told to read on the airplane from my cousin Nicki.  happy guy has a backpack with medicines (malaria pills, cipro, advil), clothes (which he’ll share with via video), and all the electronics. In his daypack he has a laptop, camera, money belt (with cash, credit cards, and passports), a stuffed monkey, the tooth case, a journal and a pen.

Business class has treated us well thus far.  In LAX we had muffins and relaxed in the Admirals Club lounge and we have been treated well on the flights with mimosas, cold beer, warm mixed nuts, and multiple meals, although airplane food is still airplane food.  Who would have thought that warm mixed nuts actually taste better?’
