Hoi An: Lanterns, Rice Fields, and Warm Smiles

by happygal

Hoi An, Vietnam, has truly exceeded our expectations. This small but vibrant city packs a wealth of experiences into its charming streets, and our time here has been amazing.

One of the biggest surprises has been the food. Local dishes have been delicious, with flavors that are rich, fresh, and hit the spot. From steaming bowls of noodles and Cao Lau to fresh spring rolls and Hoi An chicken rice, every meal has been a culinary delight. We also really loved the fresh fruit juices and coconut ice cream!

Our boat ride to the coconut forest mangroves was an adventure. Drifting through the waterways, surrounded by coconut palms, felt like stepping into another world. Another unforgettable experience was making wishes in Old Town while floating in a small rowboat. Seeing the lantern-lit waters of the Thu Bon River, shimmering with reflections, was a mesmerizing sight.

Hoi An’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the heart of the city. It is beautifully preserved and comes alive at night with glowing lanterns, colorful markets, and lively energy. The kids loved making their own traditional Hoi An lanterns, which now serve as cherished souvenirs from our trip.

Beyond the town’s charm, our peaceful bike rides through the rice fields were a highlight. The scent of rice filled the air as we cycled past local homes, often greeted with warm smiles from friendly residents. We also enjoyed some time on the beach, where the kids had a blast playing in the waves.

What made Hoi An even more special was the welcoming atmosphere. We learned a bit of Vietnamese, greeting locals with “Xin chào” and thanking them with “Cảm ơn,” which they truly appreciated. There is also a wonderful worldschooling community here, with many families choosing to stay for months at a time. The opportunities for kids to participate in activities and connect with other traveling families make it a fantastic destination for long-term stays.

Hoi An is more than just a beautiful town—it’s a place that invites you to slow down, immerse yourself in culture, and make lasting memories. Whether it’s the history, food, nature, or the warm hospitality, this little gem of Vietnam has left an imprint on our hearts.
